In my last post I noted how I had written down my prediction for Paulie’s little event last night.
Below is what actually happened:
- Paulie lost.
- The ring announcer said it was “one of the biggest upsets in sports history”.
No one said to me after the fight “There is no way you predicted that.” Instead it was “Did you get it right?” Open the envelope…cough cough…you already kn….
Paulie will lose. They (promotional company) will make a big deal of what a huge upset it was.
p.s. I thought you knew.
Me
Did You Consider?
First some facts:
- Paulie is the only person I know involved with that event (aside from Antonio who was announcing and Bill Clancy who was the ref). I had not spoken with anyone. Everything was 100% legit.
- The “beef” was real (at least with Paulie it was). He is old skool, however, and I have zero doubt it’s squashed at this point, as he even said.
- This was the heaviest division Paulie has ever fought at, or against. I heard him say if it were 147 he probably would not have entered.
- While Paulie was an A-level fighter, that was well over a decade ago (but he was never ‘great’). Incredibly marketable, however…so he was moved in the right way.
- He didn’t train all that hard. He’s travelling around doing TV, meeting with his girlies in each city, etc. Training was not his only priority (as it was for his opponent).
- The three biggest attributes in any combat sport are:
- Skill
- Size
- Hunger
- That guy Paulie fought had two of those…the third one by a large margin (Paulie has money–lots of it.)
How Did I Know?
Here is what I believe happened: Most everyone knew that Artem guy would beat Paulie. Remember, most casino’s opening up as Artem favored. I won’t get in to how this is done, but understand that the initial line comes from someone such as myself that the casino pays. They basically say “Who do you think will win, and what are the chances of it this, and what are the chances of that?” etc. They might work with a few people and if there are disparate feedback they will dig a little deeper, but usually those who do this know. From there the casino’s move the line based on the wagers coming in. You have to remember, the casinos want 50% of the people to win and 50% to lose. That is always a net profit for them—-I’ll break it all down in another post.
ANYWAY. I think they gave Paulie a shitload of money. My guess would be 750-1.5. He comes in, sells the f*ck out of the fight (like he did) and if he wins, they have a former star who is doing his thing….and if he loses (as expected) …they will begin to build Artem up.
While I never worked on that end of it (road-mapping a fighter–I just said which direction to turn) I obviously know how these things operate, and I’m confident this is exactly what happened. In fact, Paulie is a chump if his purse was not larger than every fighters COMBINED that night.
That sport is not my thing….but I am someone who enjoys watching Paulie get geeked up and I enjoyed every second of this build-up. Ha ha
Remember
In my next video, Paulie will introduce you to some real-clutch shit.
